The Coda Collection have released professionally filmed footage of the Dead playing “Friend of the Devil,” which helped kick off the Grateful Dead’s summer tour of 1989. The show, which took place at Foxboro, Mass. on July 2, 1989, is now available to stream in full on their platform.

The performance on that day included many other highlights, including the Dead opening with “Playing in the Band,” a delivery of “He’s Gone” that teased Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning” and renditions of jam music classic and mainstay “Dear Mr. Fantasy” transitioning into the Beatles “Hey Jude.”

The release of the footage is in celebration of the new collaboration of the Grateful Dead, The Coda Collection and Rhino. The partnership aims to share a unique visual insight into the united on-stage chemistry and interactions of the band in the midst of one of their most beloved eras. The streaming platform is set to release two more full sets from the Grateful Dead in September.

On Sept. 8, The Coda Collection will release Live in Washington, D.C. 7/12/89, which was captured days later at RFK Stadium during the same tour amid the backdrop of notable scrutiny from local political figures. On Sept. 29, The Coda Collection will release Live at Giants Stadium 6/17/91, one of the most blissful concerts of the Dead’s later era. The show includes Bruce Hornsby playing as a special guest on keyboards and features the first “Dark Star Jam” from the band since 1974.

The Grateful Dead are planning to release more concerts from their archives on the Coda Collection in the coming months.
