Wilco & Sleater-Kinney played to a crowd shrouded in ponchos and umbrellas at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y. Wilco’s set was opened with both bands on stage with their 1999 track “A Shot in the Arm,” which has become even more poignant in recent months.
Before Wilco took the stage Sleater-Kinney played a 40-minute set that was cut short due to weather conditions, fans were advised to take shelter. 75-minutes of heavy rain fell before things lightened up and the venue announced that the show would go on. Wilco took the stage at 8:50 p.m. just 20 minutes later than their initially scheduled set time.
After “A Shot in the Arm” Sleater-Kinney left the stage and Wilco got into their vast and beloved discography. They played “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,” “Impossible Germany,” “Box Full of Letters,” and more. The rain picked up again and Jeff Tweedy quipped that some of the songs are better accompanied with rain, but still left the on-stage banter to a minimum.
As Forest Hills Stadium’s 10 p.m. curfew was quickly approaching many fans were satisfied, but Wilco went past the usually tight curfew with “Heavy Metal Drummer” and “I’m Always in Love,” to leave fans with a warm feeling despite their wet clothes.
Wilco and Sleater-Kinney’s joint tour is set to close on Aug. 28 in Chicago. Wilco are set to tour the West Coast in October.
