Phish continued their Indiana run on Aug. 7 with a sold-out, Saturday night show at the Ruoff Music Center, and yet another Lonely Trip debut.
After a “Crowd Control” opener, the band offered plenty of fan favorites in the first half (“Poor Heart,” “The Moma Dance,” “Back on the Train”), but it was the band’s first version of “A Wave of Hope” that grabbed headlines. The track is yet another pandemic-era tune from guitarist Trey Anastasio’s surprise Lonely Trip LP. The album-closing “Evolve” also graced its first-ever Phish setlist in Nashville.
Elsewhere on Saturday, set one’s penultimate “Stash” also had the lawn talking, with its inspired improv and 16+ minute runtime.
“We’ll see you in 15 minutes,” Trey Anastasio winked at the end of set one, knowing full well the band usually clocks a 40+ minute intermission.
Set two kicked off with an “Everything’s Right” that contained elements of Phish’s go-to anthem “Simple.” From there, “What’s the Use?” became a sonic motif, reappearing later in a nice exploration of “Crosseyed and Painless.” The jam continued on into an unfinished “Down with Disease” and a pensive “Wading in the Velvet Sea,” before Phish wrapped things up with an always-danceable “Possum.”
“Drift While You’re Sleeping” acted as the encore.
Phish will close their Indiana run on Sunday, Aug. 8 and then perform a two-night stand in Hershey, Penn.
