The second half of Newport’s ‘Folk On’ festival came to a close on July 28 marking a successful conclusion of six days of collaboration, music and celebration. Every day of the festival proved to be flush with surprises and adept artistry, the final day was no exception.

The “TBA” of the day was the Black Pumas. Guitarist and singer Eric Burton jumped over the barrier and went out into the crowd to sing during the first and last songs of their set on the Lawn Stage. Watchhouse brought up Courtney Marie Andrews, JP Harris, Jake Blount and Langhorne Slim for their set.

Lake Street Dive, called one of the best sets of the week on Newport Folk Festival’s Instagram, was joined by Chris Thile for a cover of David Bowie’s “Starman,” Allison Russell for “You Are Not Alone,” which was written by Jeff Tweedy for Mavis Staples, and Jonathan Russell of The Head and The Heart for a rendition of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma.” They also performed a loving tribute to Rita Houston.

Deer Tick closed out the festival which took place not only in the home state of band founder John McCauley but also at the very same location where the band recorded their upcoming live album Live from Fort Adams. Deer Tick brought on Vanessa Carlton, who is also McCauley’s wife, for “In Our Time,” and Courtney Marie Andrews, S.G. Goodman, Katie Pruitt, and Langhorne Slim for “Too Sensitive for this World.”

Live from Fort Adams is due to release on July 30. Pre-order the album here.
