After playing three warm-up shows at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Trey Anastasio took his solo show to the Beacon Theatre on Tuesday night, returning to the venue for the first time since his crowdless Beacon Jams livestream run.
This time, however, the house was packed with a sold-out, fully vaccinated crowd, and Anastasio shared his bliss with the optimistic opener “Everything’s Right.”
The Beacon setlist mirrored quite a few songs from the preceding SPAC run – including rarities like “The Lizards” – and the show also included the same guests, pianist Jeff Tanski and the Rescue Squad Strings.
The early-set “Fluffhead” was a highlight for many, as was the shout-out to nurse Heather McDougal in the audience (McDougal became a symbol of frontline workers during The Beacon Jams, as Anastasio shouted her out and even wrote her an on-the-spot ditty in gratitude for her work).
Later, after an emotional version of “Dirt” with Tanski, Anastasio also used his return to the Beacon to mention the late T.A.B. bassist Tony Markellis, who Anastasio last played with on the very same stage during The Beacon Jams.
Naturally, a wild “Harry Hood” was used as the guitarist’s set ender, and fans used the opportunity to dust off their glowsticks and toss them around the venue.
The encore included “More” and “First Tube,” the later amplified by Tanski and the string section.
The guitarist will return to the Beacon tonight – June 23 – for yet another show.
