Nathaniel Rateliff sat in with Grace Potter at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks on Wednesday night. The Colorado resident emerged at the start of Potter’s encore to sing on a cover of Van Morrison’s “Brand New Day.” Potter and Rateliff both recently performed at New York’s Beacon Theatre as part of the Love Rocks NYC benefit show; Rateliff covered Van Morrison’s “Caravan” with the evening’s house band during his segment while Potter covered Tom Petty’s “American Girl” and shared the stage with both Bon Jovi and Warren Haynes.
While most of Potter’s Red Rocks show was a true solo set which found her bouncing between guitar and keyboards–including on portions of both Phish’s “Tweezer” and the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil”–the evening’s encore did feature a few other musicians. After Rateliff left the stage, drummer Eric Valentine and bassist Alex Proctor emerged to back Potter for the rest of her first encore. Valentine, who is also Potter’s husband and producer, and Proctor, a close friend and studio collaborator, backed the evening’s host on “The Lion The Beast The Beat,” a medley of “Turntable,” Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” and the theme from the Twilight Hour, “Paris (Ooh La La)” and “Ah Mary.” Potter then returned to close the night with a solo take on “Release.”
Potter will perform at Telluride Bluegrass today.
