The Disco Biscuits kicked off a three-night run at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre last night. Though the famed venue is still not quite allowed to host its full capacity, the gigs marked a major step back to normalcy for the Philadelphia quartet. The show opened with “Konkrete,” before the ensemble moved on to “Crystal Ball” and bassist Marc Brownstein’s narrative “Nughuffer.”
At the start of the Biscuits’ second set, they debuted a cover of Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Streets,” which both captured the evening’s celebratory mood and also nodded to the musicians’ recent work in the Grateful Dead universe. (Keyboardist Aron Magner filmed three shows with Billy and the Kids earlier this month and Red Rocks’ promoter has long asked the Biscuits to cover the tune.) The second set also included one of the Biscuits’ instrumental electronic Tractorbeam segments, which was based on the music of The Magician. The show later came to a close with a rare segue out of “Once The Fiddler Paid” and into “Clocks.”
The Disco Biscuits will return to Red Rocks this evening.
