Robert E. Lee Boulevard in New Orleans is set to be renamed, and the City Council’s Street Renaming Commission recommended changing the name to Allen Toussaint Boulevard, according to a 4WWL report. The commission’s vote occurred on Tuesday, March 10.

Toussaint himself once lived on Robert E. Lee Boulevard; his home features treble clefs on the gates and windows.

“Everybody’s happy. You’re humbled by these things,” Reginald Toussaint, Allen Toussaint’s son, said in the report. “You’d like it if he was here to celebrate with us, but I can imagine how he’d feel right now.”

The recommendation does not mean that the name change is fully confirmed. “These choices are our initial recommendations and may be tweaked as we complete the process based on additional public feedback and the final expert report,” said Mark Raymond, the vice chairman of Street Renaming Commission.
