In some welcome news from Hollywood, Questlove has been named the director of a yet-to-be-titled documentary about the legendary ’70s funk pioneer Sly Stone.
The Roots drummer made his first foray into film just a few months ago with his directorial debut, Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), winning the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Documentary and the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
“It goes beyond saying that Sly’s creative legacy is in my DNA… it’s a Black musician’s blueprint,” Questlove explained via press statement. “To be given the honor to explore his history and legacy is beyond a dream for me.”
