The Allman Brothers Band are adding to their archival catalog. The band will share cuts from their Sept. 28, 1971 performance at the Austin Municipal Auditorium in Austin, Texas. The new live release, dubbed Down In Texas ’71, will be released digitally on March 26, the anniversary of the band’s formation.
The nine-track collection features fan-favorite cuts such as “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “Hot ‘Lanta,” “Statesboro Blues” and many more (see below for a full tracklist). Six of the nine tracks feature saxophonist Rudolph “Juicy” Carter as a guest. Also, the physical CD version will feature a bonus recording of a radio interview with Berry Oakley and Duane Allman, which was taped just a few months before the performance.
“Down In Texas ’71 captures a special snapshot in time during the pivotal year of 1971 for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group,” read a press release. “Coming two months after the release of At Fillmore East in July and occurring one month before the death of Duane Allman in October, the Austin show presents the original ABB line-up–Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe–at the peak of their creativity.”
Proceeds from the release will benefit the Allman Brothers Band Museum in Macon, Ga.

February 12, 2021 at 12:29 pmWhat we really need is a Jack Pearson era show, or box set. I love the original line-up and all, but do we really need another 9 song set of the same tunes we’ve already got countless times?

February 18, 2021 at 1:00 pmYes!! Saw my first ABB show 7/4/97 when I was 18. Caught them 9 more times with Jack in the lineup. The man has some serious guitar skills and they are unique. The licks were always interesting and the jams were fantastic. Luckily I was able to do a lot of bootleg trading back in the day so I was able to get most of these shows, but now the cheap CDs they were ripped onto are starting to degrade. Why has this excellent era been ignored? I’m always happy to hear more Duane but I wish they had more songs in the repertoire back in the day.
Excited, but
February 11, 2021 at 1:00 pmcautious. Obviously, always interested in any Duane ABB shows, but the guest saxophonist makes me weary. Other sit ins that I have heard with the original ABB lineup were super sloppy. Staying tuned…
