The latest – and perhaps most surprising – act to be booked for Joe Biden’s Presidential Inauguration this week are ’90s one-hit-wonder New Radicals, who are known by many for their toe-tapping hit “You Get What You Give.”
Other than its ability to connect with voters on a wave of ’90s nostalgia, the song has a special meaning to the President Elect and his late son Beau Biden, who used it to rally as he fought cancer.
“During breakfast, Beau would often make me listen to what I thought was his theme song, ‘You Get What You Give’ by the New Radicals,” Joe Biden wrote in his 2017 memoir. “Even though Beau never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most — I think he knew that this day might come. The words to the song are: ‘This whole damn world can fall apart. You’ll be OK, follow your heart.’”
After the news broke of the performance, New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander explained in a press statement, “If there’s one thing on Earth that would possibly make us get the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could be even the tiniest beacon of light in such a dark time.”
Joe Biden will be inaugurated at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Additional performers for the daylong event will include Lady Gaga (performing the National Anthem), Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters and more.
