Still from “Distance” music video via YouTube

In the time following the passing of his father, bassist Wolfgang Van Halen has shared his debut solo track, “Distance.”

Released under the name Mammoth WVH, the track – and the accompanying music video – chronicles Wolfgang and Eddie’s close relationship, from father-son antics to eventually becoming bandmates in the final iteration of Van Halen.

“I never intended ‘Distance’ to be the very first piece of music people would hear from me, but I also thought my father would be here to celebrate its release,” Wolfgang said in a press release. “This is for him. I love and miss you, Pop.”

Wolfgang initially broke the news of Eddie’s death on Oct. 6, writing, “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift… My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.”

Mammoth WVH is expected to release his full solo debut album some time in 2021.
