Jeff Tweedy descended upon the McHenry Outdoor Theatre in Illinois last week, playing a drive-in show chock-full of covers and debuts.

To start, he acknowledged the Jewish New Year by opening with the healing prayer of “Mi Shebeirach” and seemed to find his groove early on with back-to-back full-band debuts of Love Is The King tracks “Gwendolyn” and “Opaline.”

Later, Neil Young fans were thrilled with Tweedy’s first-ever cover of American Stars ‘n Bars cut “The Old Country Waltz,” followed by Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere‘s “The Losing End.”

After Mavis Staples’ “You Are Not Alone” (the title track of her Grammy-winning LP, which Tweedy produced), the musician dipped back into the Billy Bragg/Wilco songbook with “California Stars,” before closing with “Save It For Me.”
