Later this month, Melvin Seals and JGB will take the stage for the first time in six months to celebrate the legendary keyboardist’s birthday.
Cats On The Bandstand: A Very Melvin Birthday Show will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27th at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
“Melvin’s birthday celebration is always a big weekend-long bash on the west coast, but this year we will be live-streaming on his actual birthday and inviting EVERYONE to join the party!” reads a message on the band’s social media.
The show’s lineup will include recent JGB recruit/guitarist John Kadlecik as well as John-Paul McLean and Jeremy Hoenig.
The gig also promises “call-ins & other surprise appearances from legendary members of the Jerry Garcia Band family.”

People, in this case, a “co-worker” if you will, of Jerry’s for many many good years, deserves to be able to try and make a living, pay the bills as it were. The Garcia Family Estate does not have a problem with this, nor would Jerry in his grave, or in this case: the constitution of the Ganges River, or San Francisco Bay. You should have a ‘little more class about this’. Think before you write.

Melvin has every right to play the music he was a huge part of.. just cause it’s JGB doesn’t mean Jerry wrote, arranged, composed etc every song..not to mention all the covers they did. You think it’s appalling and that Jerry’s legacy is being tarnished. If there wasn’t a huge market of Deadheads out there still wanting to see and hear the Dead’s music there would be no band’s out there playing the music and bringing tons of Joy and happiness to so many people. It’s a celebration of Jerry’s life and legacy that so many people..many of whom never got to see Jerry… still go to see the many band’s playing the music. That’s like saying Dead and Co shouldn’t exist either cause Jerry and Phil aren’t there. The music is timeless and the popularity of band’s like JGB, JRAD, DSO, and many more are a testament to how much love there is for the music. You’re entitled to your opinion .. you’re the one who’s missing out and I feel bad for you if you can’t see or find the beauty in the music living on and bringing new Heads into the fold..as well as older Heads who can never get enough of Jerry’s/The Dead’s music ✌️
