After broadcasting the successful ‘Festing In Place’ virtual Jazz Fest back in April and May, WWOZ (90.7 FM) is returning with a labor day radio virtual festival, titled ‘Festing In Place: The Next Fest Thing.’ The event will be “a new 7-day virtual festival featuring classic live sets from New Orleans music legends past and present.” (Quote via Facebook event description.) It will take place starting today, Sept. 4 through Sept. 7, and then again the following weekend on Sept. 11-13.
“We’re continuing our collaboration with the Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, which has catalogued and preserved thousands of recordings for years, and we’re proud to expand to other collaborators as well, including the Hogan Jazz Archive with Tulane University Special Collections, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, and the estate of Louis Prima,” wrote WWOZ in the event’s description. “While Jazz Festing in Place showcased the scope and depth of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, with The Next Fest Thing our aim is to show you the entire city-wide picture of live music in New Orleans, which includes Jazz Fest, but also great festivals like French Quarter Fest and Satchmo SummerFest and Crescent City Blues & BBQ Fest, but also other places we love like Tipitina’s and WWOZ’s own Piano Night, and even small clubs like Snug Harbor and the Spotted Cat Music Club on Frenchmen Street.”
WWOZ recently shared the schedule for the event, which will feature many legendary performances, such as Fats Domino at Jazz Fest 2001, Allen Toussaint at WWOZ Piano Night 2005, Toots & the Maytals at Voodoo Fest 2007, the Radiators at Jazz Fest 1984 and many more. The final weekend will feature day-closing sets by The Meters (Sept. 11), Dr. John (Sept. 12) and The Neville Brothers (Sept. 13.)
