On Aug. 21, Joe Strummer’s birthday, Jesse Malin, Jeff Raspe and David Zonshine will produce ‘A Song for Joe: Celebrating the Life of Joe Strummer,’ a “global event to celebrate Joe Strummer’s legacy as a solo musician and singer of The Clash.” (Quote via press release.) The broadcast will begin at 3 p.m. ET.
Malin himself will host the event, which will feature never-before-seen footage of Strummer performing live. In addition, the event will feature “special performances and testimonials by many of the former Clash frontman’s friends and peers.” Some of these friends and peers will include Bob Weir, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Tom Morello, Dropkick Murphys and many more.
“To see so many musicians and artists come forward to honor Joe is really touching,” said Strummer’s wife Lucinda Tait (via press release). “Community was always important to him. Whether it was playing music with friends, organizing all night campfires, or hijacking festivals, Joe was always focused on bringing people together. Even though we can’t all be in the same room together, I cannot think of a better way for us all to feel united. Joe would have loved this.”
“This tribute to Joe is not only a great way to honor him, but to also remind people how important his message is right now,” added Malin (via press release).
The two-hour event will stream for free at joestrummer.com, and all donations benefiting Save Our Stages. Check out the full lineup below!

August 20, 2020 at 10:27 pmSo the story goes… Strummer approached Weir at the World Music Festival in Montego Bay 1982. At this point, the Clash were coming apart at the seams. Their growing mainstream popularity was taking its toll. He was interested in finding out how the Dead had managed to keep their scene relatively intact through the years. It calls to mind what Levon Helm once stated, “The Dead kept their own council. The Band did not. That’s why they survived.” Say what you will about the Grateful Dead. Their legacy will outlast everyone of us. Long live the Dead. Long live the Clash.

August 20, 2020 at 8:17 pmSaw The Clash 12 times, Joe was/is a hero on multiple levels. I sure miss him, these days more than ever.
Now who’s this Bob Weir guy and why the bickering?! 🤣😆🤣😆

August 19, 2020 at 6:41 pmBob Weir: the touchiest subject on JBs.com. Hilarious. He is easy to make fun of, folks gotta admit. Don’t gimme that age excuse., dude is healthy as a horse.

August 19, 2020 at 7:54 pmI will give you that age excuse… here’s a good way to measure yourself… would you walk up to any man/woman in their 70s and talk shit to them in person? If the answer is no, then why do it in cyberspace? If the answer is yes, then there is no amount of explaining I’m going to do to change your soul…
HA
August 19, 2020 at 10:49 pmIf I ever meet Bob Weir, I will absolutely ask him why he has chosen to change the tempo of the songs he plays. I’m sure he would give me an honest answer….willing to bet he doesn’t say “because I’m old, man, cut me some slack” nor would he question my soul, I’m willing to bet….I’ll let you know

August 20, 2020 at 10:53 amSame reason they as a band changed the pace of others’ music they played? Why would he do the things the same when NOT playing with JERRY, PHIL, the DRUMMERS, or what ever keyboard player of what ever era? Something called improvisation escape YOU? if YOU want the originals just play them on YOUR music machine.

August 19, 2020 at 5:33 pmI met Strummer at a Mescaleros show in So. Cal. I was wearing a Dead shirt. He said he hated the Dead and that Weir was a no-talent, arrogant clown… So there you have it…
Jim
August 20, 2020 at 10:49 amTOPPER HEAD Sure and YOUR mother said she was a virgin also after YOUR birth. But that’s only because YOUR father wouldn’t admit any chance of a DNA connection when he saw what YOU looked like.
?
August 21, 2020 at 10:17 amI’m wondering if JIM is Weir himself..? He seems to have a vested interest and gets butt-hurt easily. He seems dumb like Weir… JIM are you Weir?

August 19, 2020 at 1:07 pmEdie Brickel should have kicked Weir’s as like she did Paul Simon

August 19, 2020 at 1:04 pmNice walk back.
You have no balls in real life too, SnowFlake?

August 19, 2020 at 2:12 pmSnowFlake… no balls… so you prefer the douche life? Not sure about you but SnowFlakes seem much more enjoyable than used douche water, YMMV.
Good one
August 19, 2020 at 8:15 amIt’s just commentary folks. Don’t be so easily offended. Yes I think it is great so many artists including Bob are paying tribute. For the record, weir has chosen to change the tempo of the songs he plays, fine, but no one “has” to like it. It was a choice.
me
August 19, 2020 at 2:10 pmNo one said you had to like it… and I’m not offended… I’m just so tired of how easily it seems people choose to knock people down rather than help them up. I don’t live in a Utopian world, I realize it’s how it can be… but it’s a simple thing not to do… show some respect to your neighbor, it goes a long way and everyone benefits…

August 18, 2020 at 9:05 pmI think it’s awesome that Bob Weir is saluting the work of the late, great Joe Strummer. Hearing Bobby sing ‘Train in Vain’ with Furthur put a smile on the face of this old Deadhead/Clash lover. Weir also did a cover of ‘Death or Glory’ with Jesse Malin and it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what they stream. Joe Strummer, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Television, the Ramones and many others of their ilk have paid homage to the Dead in one form or another over the years. Like George Clinton once said, “Free your ass and your mind will follow.”

August 19, 2020 at 1:42 pmI meet Joe at the Glastonbury Festival office. Next thing I knew we where having a good talk about the magic of music. How when everyone in a band. Let’s go of their egos and really listen to what each person is playing. That’s when the real music and the magic starts! It was the best discussion I have ever had about music with anyone. Joe the whole time was so down to earth and so humble! Then he told me the best place to drink at Glastonbury Festival. He sadly passed away soon after that. That drinking spot is now named after Joe at the Festival. Joe! Thank You! for the great exchange! Sometimes it takes years to know someone before you have a great talk! We miss you! Hope your playing in another great band!

August 18, 2020 at 8:00 pmGuess Pinch and Good One are right.
That schlep Weir is a put on. There is No Way Bob Weir was a Rock Star w the Dead. He was a bore! He NEVER brought pandemonium to a crowd. I must’ve been dreaming during some of those Ripping 80’s shows.
Guess I learned a lesson today.
Thanks!
Gentle Jack Jones
August 19, 2020 at 1:59 pmYeah, Bobby always brought the cheese in the 80’s, but you know who liked him more than anybody else? Jerry Garcia. Always a hoot, friend.

August 18, 2020 at 4:33 pmBecause nothing says Joe Strummer like Bob Weir…
Seriously, I can’t make this stuff up.
“Okay everyone, put your hands together for an extremely slow version of ‘London Calling’ played on an acoustic guitar by an old guy who likes to sing like a cowboy!”
good one
August 18, 2020 at 6:02 pmhaha. well, if they were friends, I’m sure joe would approve of bob’s participation. that said, you are Dead on, (yes, pun int.) about the slowing down of every song he plays now. He ruined Edie Brickell and new B. show (IMO) at lockn with that slowed-down drivel. and dead and co…..let’s not even go there

August 18, 2020 at 11:18 pmFor the life of me, I cannot understand why someone feels the need to stoop to such douche levels and make comments like this guy here. Mocking a nearly 73 y/o man. Do you treat your grandparents like that? Have you done anything with your life that compares to what Bob has done with his? I’m not even much of a Dead fan but it’s pathetic how people talk shit for… what… so you can feel cool?
Gentle Jack Jones
August 19, 2020 at 1:56 pmYeah man, you know, Joe would be 68 if he made it this far. Also, just in general, Joe said that he was a hippy himself, and one of his major inspirations was Captain Beefheart, of all people (or whatever life form the Catain was). He’d likely have been delighted to see Weir feting him if he still walked the earth.

August 19, 2020 at 4:35 pmI don’t treat my grandparents like that, but my grandparents have aged gracefully and fully embrace the limits that being elderly has placed on their abilities to perform in their life activities. Oh, yeah, and they aren’t professional paid performers…
Maybe if you were a Dead fan you’d realize what pathetic shell of an artist the guy has become.
Cheers
me
August 19, 2020 at 7:51 pmGot it, so because Bob has chosen to continue to play and put the smiles on many faces to this day, you can be disrespectful… and though I’m not a huge fan, there’s a fair chance I saw the band live before you did… assuming you did… and while I only saw them 7 times, I know what your point is but, in my book, there’s still no need to talk shit about a man in his 70s. If that’s what you’re made of, I’ll step aside and let you feel good about yourself…

August 20, 2020 at 10:45 amSOMEONE PINCH ME: My first DEAD show, Woodstock, the original, and 400+ after that. Is that enough to be qualified as a DEAD fan? Age gracefully? What’s that? As rocking chair? Being grand parent and the doctors continually pushing “don’t stop” it seems BOB is doing what is best for him and with his ticket sales enough to keep the fans interested. Recently saw Bill Walton at a Booby show and sporting a Bobby T. He’s not fan enough? He’s not what he was in the past because those Grateful Dead days are gone as are those days in general. But Bob keeps moving along, doing quite well as to himself and the music moving one. Respect the man, as I am sure he would respect your grand parents. PITIFUL on your part. Bob and the rest of them have done well as to themselves and honoring their history.

August 19, 2020 at 7:12 pmI agree with Me.. sounds funny to say but since that’s the name I’ll use it. People are entitled to their opinions but it never ceases to amaze me how many people who have crap to say about Bob/Dead and co. Thankfully I got to see The Dead with Jerry 26 times and frankly I couldn’t be happier that Dead and co is a band that while maybe slower than the original..they still kick ass in concert and anyone who thinks Mayer can’t play really hasn’t been listening. Not to mention Oteil and Jeff. It’s all good though.. rather not have any negativity around any Dead and co shows. I’ve had nothing but great times at every Dead and co show I’ve been to..25 times and hopefully whenever things return to normal. ✌️💀⚡🌷
