Scientists from the medical center at Halle University in Germany are testing the spread of coronavirus at large-scale indoor events by hosting a 4,000-person concert. The project, dubbed RESTART-19, hopes to “develop a mathematical model for risk assessment, and be able to set the framework for future indoor events with large numbers of people.” (Quote via Pollstar report.)

The show will be a performance by German pop artist Tim Bendzko, and it will take place at the Quarterback Immobilien Arena in Leipzig, Germany. While the arena can hold up to 12,000 concertgoers, the experimenters are reducing the capacity to 4,000 for the event.

According to the Pollstar report, the scientists will run three different scenarios: “The first will see 4,000 people entering and exiting the venue as they would on a regular concert or match day. In a second scenario, the same number of people will be guided in currents, while maintaining a distance. Scenario three introduces 1,5-meter distance on the stands, and only 2,000 guests will be admitted.” Bendzko will perform throughout each of the scenarios.

All participants will be tested for COVID-19, and other safety precautions will be put in place in each of the scenarios.
