Adding themselves to the growing list of musicians and music industry professionals observing Black Out Tuesday, Phish have postponed their weekly Dinner And A Movie “in solidarity with all those working to eliminate systemic racism.”
“We are deeply troubled by the senseless killing of George Floyd and the injustice shown to countless others over the years,” the band added in an official statement on Monday. “Building a better society requires every single one of us to play an active role. Today, The WaterWheel Foundation is donating to Color of Change, a non-profit devoted to racial justice. Tomorrow night’s Dinner and a Movie webcast will be postponed until next week.”
Phish were originally set to stream their July 26, 2013 show at the scenic Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wa.
It will be offered next week, on Tuesday June 9.

June 4, 2020 at 9:03 amRemedio – phish were trust fund kids to begin with. Mikes dad owned store 24 and pages dead was one of the inventors of Tylenol. They lost lots of money for many years before the investment justifiably paid off. Truth.

June 3, 2020 at 11:18 pmI am very grateful for your thoughtfulness, Isaac, and proud of your level-headedness & patience with all of the folks who seem put off by a band standing for something of utmost importance that many of us take for granted: justice & equality…valuing the humanity of ALL people, not just those we agree with or who look most like us. Yes, it’s a symbolic gesture. Yes, more can—and frankly should—be done. But, standing in solidarity in this manner is a much better idea iMHO than just going about their business with their heads in the sand as if nothing is wrong with the systems in place and playing another FREE show that is greatly unappreciated.
Truthfully, I don’t know why I am surprised by this backlash from my fellow Phish fans. There are hardly ever any comments on Phish articles on Jambands.com save for a few troll baits. But many are showing their true colors tonight. A sad day in our Phish community.

June 4, 2020 at 1:14 pmYeah, man. Well put. I hesitate to engage online, but if there were ever a time to use one’s voice… Moreover, this is my band – this is our band – and we should push for the kind of scene we want to see and the kind of world we want to live in. Passivity, resignation, nihilism – these cede ground to a pernicious status quo.

June 3, 2020 at 4:54 pmIf they are only goin to stream shows from the last 10 years they might as well black out every Tuesday.

June 2, 2020 at 9:39 pmPhish is deeply troubled by the murder of Floyd and countless others.
They’re joining together with others for a day of silence.
Out of respect.
They weren’t always in mansions. Saw them in the early 90’s in front of about 150 people in Santa Barbara.
They’ve come a long way, baby.

June 2, 2020 at 9:27 pmRemember when all we had to do was be kind and rewind? The good old days…I guess YouTube will suffice with its 20k hours of free live Phish

June 2, 2020 at 8:37 pmThe LAST thing we want is politics infecting our music and the musicians.
You are tools.
All lives matter. Period.
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:59 pmPolitics is already in our music. The inequities structural to our society inflect our social and cultural world at every level. Better to face this than to hide away.

June 2, 2020 at 9:06 pmSo brave of them. Such a powerful statement. Now please excuse them while they retreat to their mansions in gated communities and light joints with $100 bills.

June 3, 2020 at 12:28 amPolitics? Infecting music? Can I assume you’re either failing miserably while attempting to be humorous, or else suffer from some type of head trauma, or other mental defect? This is about treating human beings/American citizens as they have the right to be treated. It’s as simple as that… you can’t manage to understand such a basic human desire?

June 2, 2020 at 7:56 pmA lot of phish fans are selfish trash, it’s always been that way… You see the lawn after the show… Phish should make us pledge black lives matter if we want to buy tickets. Big screw you to anyone who feels inconvienced by people asking for equal rights

June 2, 2020 at 9:23 pmWell said, phriend.
The problem is way beyond eyes can see. Simply look at the few phans that took the time to post their stupidity here. Very sad.
CURRENT TRUMP SUPPORTER!
June 2, 2020 at 2:18 pmNow I’m mad at the police… For not shooting any and all rioting protesters and letting God sort it out.
EX-Trump supporter!
June 2, 2020 at 1:35 pmThank you Phish, for trying, however you can, to support those that are perpetuating the hatred, injustice and inequality. I love these broadcasts (Din & Movie). The the VB concert was truly amazing. I’ll patiently wait for next week. Maybe Cheetos-head will read his bible between now and then….Oh yeah; he’s illiterate…

June 2, 2020 at 8:51 pmLike Phish will stop racism and hatred…
…what a joke.
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:58 pmThis choice, as I read it, is not about stopping racism but building awareness, perhaps for people such as yourself.

June 2, 2020 at 12:49 pm(((Phish))) is just virtue signaling for the masses. These are talented musicians not bright, learned men. Stick to trying not to butcher songs Troy.
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:56 pmThe masses need action, but rhetoric and signaling have strategic value too. You are engaged in such signaling, in fact, with the cowardly use of antisemitic parentheticals.

June 2, 2020 at 11:41 amVery disappointed in this action. One bad cop does something unimaginably wrong and millions of others are responsible?
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:53 pmActually, its been many cops over many years. And further, it is the institution of policing, rather than any one individual cop, that is instrumental to the protection of racial hierarchy.
John McCarthy
June 2, 2020 at 9:19 pmYes. We are all responsible. Let’s demand better. Let’s demand and expect better. Let’s act better and learn to lead by example.

June 2, 2020 at 9:50 amSo they’re trying to fight “systemic racism” by supporting a racist organization/movement……..
Matt
June 2, 2020 at 8:38 pmYou nailed it.
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:50 pmThey are attempting to speak out against systemic racism by taking an action. That action may or may not be strategic, but ignoring conditions of injustice only perpetuates an unjust status quo.

June 3, 2020 at 7:32 pmIf racism is systemic in America, then why are Asians & Immigrants from India the #1 & #2 richest demographics?
Brian Pirlo
June 3, 2020 at 7:33 pmIf racism is systemic in America, then why are Asians & Immigrants from India the #1 & #2 richest demographics & not Whites?
Isaac
June 4, 2020 at 12:38 pmOne can have wealth – as an individual or as a group – and still be systematically discriminated against. These are not mutually exclusive social facts. Moreover, Asian American wealth is the exception to minority demographic success (if we count wealth as success) and not the rule. Of course, the distribution of wealth in the US (and globally) – the ownership of assets, as opposed to income – skews dramatically white. In any case, the struggle is for justice, not money.

June 4, 2020 at 12:41 pm(Also, the validity of your stat depends upon what you mean by “immigrant” here.)

June 2, 2020 at 9:40 amWeak. You think rioters will observe Blackout Tuesday Trey? Nope!
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:48 pmRioting need not detract from the anger against injustice that we should all feel. To fight injustice need not depend on the actions of others.
Tim
June 2, 2020 at 7:15 amBecause we all know the existence systemic racism hinges on whether or not Phish decides to air a concert from seven years ago.
Isaac
June 2, 2020 at 8:46 pmthe existence of systemic racism hinges on what we all decide to do, as individuals and collectively
