“We’re going to have a number of guests out,” Bob Weir said at the top of the Wolf Bros second set on Saturday night. “Some of them are new friends and I don’t even know their names,” he added with a chuckle.
The trio descended upon the historic Ryman Auditorium as a stop on their Spring Tour and used the show as an opportunity to raise money for the Middle Tennessee Emergency Response Fund, who are helping the state recover from devastating tornadoes. For the entirety of the show, a Tennessee state flag hung near Jay Lane’s drumkit.
After opening with a rousing “The Music Never Stopped”> “Easy Answers”> “The Music Never Stopped” sandwich, the band highlighted set one with “Loser” and “Dark Star”> “One More Saturday Night,” featuring Russ Pahl on pedal steel guitar.
Even more guests arrived in the band’s second frame, including Katie Pruitt singing on “Ramble On Rose,” Frankie Ballard playing guitar on “Big River” and the duo of Jamey Johnson and Jimmy Hall on a bustout of Kingfish’s “Bye & Bye.” (The tune was last played by Weir with his Bobby & The Midnites band on Sept. 18, 1980 in Santa Cruz, Calif.)
Margo Price and Pahl joined in for “Scarlet Begonias” followed by the surprising re-emergence of “Dark Star” which included Buddy Miller and Pahl.
“Dark Star” was jammed into “Black Muddy River” (also with Miller and Pahl), which might have been the musical highlight of the evening if not for the appearance of Emmylou Harris for a stirring version of “Angel From Montgomery.”
After Pahl stuck around for “Days Between,” the show closed out with all of the guests taking the stage for “Going Down the Road Feelin’ Bad” and an encore of “The Weight.”
“Thank you to everyone who came out and worked so hard to make this benefit happen,” Weir wrote afterwards. “If you still want to help those impacted by the tornadoes in Middle Tennessee, you can text NASHVILLE TO 50155.”
