After playing two standout nights in Colorado with the newly-reformed Oysterhead, Trey Anastasio went straight to Mexico to join up with his old friend Dave Matthews for a two-song sit-in at the Moon Palace resort.
Matthews and guitarist Tim Reynolds were celebrating their third evening at their namesake destination event, and while their single set was rife with standout moments – an opening “Warehouse,” the emotive “Say Goodbye,” a solo Reynolds version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kahmir” – it was Anastasio’s surprise appearance that became the weekend’s most memorable moment.
Matthews, Reynolds and Anastasio performed Phish’s “Waste” and “Bathtub Gin,” simultaneously reviving the spirit of Dave Matthews & Friends. (The collective featured all three musicians from 2003-2006, and setlists often included Matthews and Anastasio performing the two aforementioned Phish covers.)
From there, the Matthews/Reynolds duo reclaimed the stage to perform a powerful trio of “Typical Situation,” “Why I Am” and “Dancing Nancies.”
Their first encore featured “Here On Out,” “Some Devil” and “All Along the Watchtower,” but fans waited on bated breath to hear the final tune of the weekend, Matthews’ smash hit “Crash Into Me.”
The night prior, Feb. 15, also saw Matthews and Reynolds invite guests to join them: Amos Lee joined the duo on “Angel from Montgomery,” and Aiofe O’Donovan, Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz joined Matthews and Reynolds on “The Maker” and “Ants Marching.” For more information on that show, click here.
