In the wake of the passing of Neal Casal, a number of artists will come together for Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, a tribute album that will benefit mental health organizations like MusiCares, Backline and the Neal Casal Music Foundation.

Recording sessions for the album – co-produced by Jim Scott and Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools – will begin Monday, Feb. 10 and it will feature “a wide range of artists from the rock, Americana and country worlds.”

In addition, a new documentary about Casal is in production; the project will be led by filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann.

Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal hopes to reflect some of the beauty Casal brought to this world back to him and in the process raise awareness and resources for musicians and artists facing the same struggles as Casal in pursuit of a life dedicated to music and art,” reads a press release.
