In the midst of her six sold-out shows at the Ryman Auditorium, Brandi Carlile celebrated the penultimate night of her residency with sit-ins by both Courtney Barnett and Courtney Marie Andrews.
After a mid-set cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You,” Carlile welcomed Barnett – who opened the show with a solo set, and recently made headlines by sitting in with Wilco in Mexico – for a version of Gillian Welch’s “Everything is Free.”
Afterwards, Barnett was swapped for another Courtney (Courtney Marie Andrews) for a version of “May Your Kindness Remain,” an Andrews original.
Carlile then closed the show out herself with her Grammy-winning single “The Joke” off her standout 2018 LP By The Way, I Forgive You.
The singer then led her band on a four-part encore, including “Beginning to Feel the Years,” Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” “Mainstream Kid” and finally, “Party of One.”
Carlile will close her week-long Ryman residency on Jan. 21.
