On Sunday, Jan. 12, Joe Russo and an all-star group of musicians performed as ‘Hooteroll? + Plus!’ at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. The show mostly featured selections from Howard Wales and Jerry Garcia’s 1971 album Hooteroll? (as well as the album’s 1987 and 2010 CD version releases). The band also performed a few other jazz-fusion tunes, as well as the debut of a song from Russo’s recent solo record, phér•bŏney. The show was a part of NYC Winter Jazzfest.

The evening began with an opening set from The Bogie Band, which featured Russo on drums. Multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie, the band’s leader, and trumpet player Jordan McLean would also play during the Hooteroll set.

For the main set, the band was made up of Russo, Bogie and McLean, along with Erik Deutsch, Jonathan Goldberger, Dave Harrington and Kevin Kendrick.

Hooteroll? + Plus!’s set began with “Up From The Desert” followed by “A Trip To What’s Next.” Both songs featured Mauro Refosco on percussion. Next, the band performed “phér•bŏney love theme” from Russo’s solo record. This marked the first time the drummer had ever played the song live. Next came another song not on Hooteroll?, “Vox Humana,” a song written by Carla Bley from vibraphonist Gary Burton’s 1976 album Dreams So Real.

“One A.M. Approach” came next, followed by another song outside of the Hooteroll? catalog, “Directions no. 1” written by Joe Zawinul and featured on Miles Davis’ 1981 album Directions. Next came a duo of Hooteroll? songs: “Morning in Marin” (which opens the 1987 CD version of the album but does not appear on the original 1971 LP version) and “Da Birg Song.” Next came the final non-Hooteroll? selection of the night, Gary Burton’s “Unfinished Sympathy.” “South Side Strut” followed and closed the set.

For the encore, the band invited Dominica Fossati to provide flute on “Uncle Martin’s.” Finally, “DC-502” closed out the evening.
