Just as she did last year, MSNBC’s Katy Tur delivered a send-off to the past year that was riddled with clever references to a band near and dear to her heart, Phish.

As Phish’s “Free” played in the background, Tur referenced songs such as “Simple” (“This year has been like sim-bop and be-bophones, sky-balls and sax-scraper”), “Stash” (“2019 got so overwrought you couldn’t help but wonder: is it for this my life I sought? Maybe so, maybe not”), “Mango Song” (“[2019] hasn’t made any sense; it’s like looking in the mirror and finding out your hands and feet are mangos”) and many more. All the while, she never actually mentioned Phish by name, instead allowing Phish-fan-viewers to enjoy the inside joke.

She concluded the monologue with a reference to “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.”: “Remember, this is what 2019 smelled like. You will always remember where you were.” She then slid on a pair of Phish sunglasses and concluded her show by saying “see you tonight” to all the Phish fans who were in on the joke and might be attending the show at Madison Square Garden that night.
