The most recent episode of Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig’s Apple Music show, Time Crisis, featured a chat with fellow bandleader Huey Lewis, and the two musicians and Koenig’s co-host, Jake Longstreth, delved into various topics, including Lewis’ childhood in the hippy heyday of San Francisco and his continuing connection to that scene through his current landlord, Bob Weir.
Speaking about the numerous luminaries that he encountered through his mother, who moved Lewis to SF in 1955 when he was 5 years old, Lewis says, “I’d wake up in the morning and [Charles] Mingus would be at breakfast.” He also gets into his musical life before he started The News, including busking around Europe and Africa with a bag of harmonicas, seeing the early days of UK punk (and playing soccer with Ozzy Osbourne) when touring and recording with Clover and more.
The topic of The News being referenced in American Psycho of course also comes up, along with Lewis’ continuing battle with hearing loss, which can range from good days to days where he can barely hear anything.
