On Thursday evening, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO, for a two-set affair at the famed venue, and the group welcomed saxophone player Stuart Bogie for the entire show on various horns, along with presenting a combination of Phish’s “First Tube” and the Grateful Dead’s “Terrapin Station.”
After opening the night with a cover of The Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road,” JRAD offered takes on the Dead’s “Foolish Heart” and “Shakedown Street” before surprising the crowd with a tease of “First Tube” that melted in and out of a “Terrapin” jam. The first set later closed out with the Dead’s “Wharf Rat” and “Hell in a Bucket.”
Continuing the show with Bogie in set two, the group opened with the staples “Bird Song,” “Feel Like a Stranger” and “Cats Under the Stars,” followed by Bob Dylan’s “Tell Me, Momma,” a take on Jane’s Addiction’s “Mountain Song” and the closing “I Know You Rider.” For the one-song encore, JRAD emerged to nod to their late friend Neal Casal with a heartfelt “Brokedown Palace,” after which drummer Russo and guitarist Tom Hamilton embraced behind Russo’s set before walking off stage with the band.
Below, check out the full setlist along with fan-shot video from the night of the “First Tube/Terrapin” jam and the encore tribute (via Live For Live Music). Next up for Almost Dead is a three-night Texas run starting in Dallas, TX, Sept. 12. See their full schedule here.

August 30, 2019 at 4:45 pmJRAD is GD for Phish kids. It’s Phish weekend. I can see the nod. Most of the crowd would rather listen to Phish. Real heads were at Beonkeys watching JK and Melvin. That was Jerry level good.
