John Mayer’s Nashville stop on his solo tour not only treated fans to a Chris Stapleton sit-in, but a new, original duet written by the two musicians just 24 hours before.

“I’ve done a lot of cool stuff before, but nothing quite like writing a song with the great @chrisstapleton on a Wednesday and playing it live on an arena stage on a Thursday,” Mayer wrote afterwards via Instagram. “It’s called ‘I Just Remembered That I Didn’t Care,’ and it’s available now somewhere on YouTube. (And if that wasn’t enough, he sat in on “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.”) Thanks Chris for the idea to write a song to perform together, and for being such a creative powerhouse. The afterglow is bright.”

The new tune came midway through the second half of the two-set show, which also included versions of Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’ and a David Ryan Harris-led, solo acoustic take on Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones.” (Stapleton also sat in for Mayer’s live favorite “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.”)
