To pay homage to all of the mothers out there, we’re looking back at Phish’s 7/19/91 gig in Somerville, Mass. when the band brought out a very special guest for their tune “I Didn’t Know.”

Mimi Fishman – mother of drummer Jon Fishman – jumped onstage for the song’s traditional vacuum solo, as guitarist Trey Anastasio gave her a warm introduction.

“Ladies and gentlemen without this woman, none of us would be here tonight, so please give a warm welcome to Fish’s mother,” he said.

Of course, Mimi Fishman is known to many Phish fans as the founder and namesake of the Mimi Fishman Foundation, which is a “volunteer-administered, fan-driven non-profit dedicated to raising funds for a diverse range of charitable organizations that each, in some way, touched the life of our founder Mimi Fishman.”
