A new documentary film, Carmine Street Guitars, which focuses on the unique New York City guitar shop of the same name, made its debut at South By Southwest and a few other festivals and theaters last month, and the movie’s creators are now auctioning off one of the shop’s custom guitars for a good cause.

Carmine Street Guitars, located in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, uses reclaimed wood from around the NYC borough—taken from bars, hotels, churches and more—to make custom guitars, handcrafted by guitar maker Rick Kelly and his apprentice Cindy Hulej. The shop has provided guitars for the likes of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Patti Smith and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, among others.

The new documentary on the shop, which chronicles five days in the life of the luthiers and features some of the establishments famous clientele, is dedicated to late director Jonathan Demme. One of Kelly’s Carmine Street guitars is currently being auctioned off in Demme’s name to raise money for Americans for Immigrant Justice. More information on that auction can be found here.
