Newport Folk Festival has announced that Trey Anastasio will join the event’s star-studded roster for 2019.
Anastasio will perform solo on the Newport stage on Sunday, July 28. He will join other previously-announced artists like Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band, Kacey Musgraves, Stephen Marley, Rayland Baxter, Lukas Nelson, Lake Street Dive and more.
Newport Folk has also made a donation on Anastasio’s behalf to the music program at Mt. Pleasant High School, which is located in Rhode Island’s nearby capital of Providence. The grant was entrusted to The Mockingbird Foundation, Phish’s fan-created charity which helps music programs around the US.
“The benefits of music education in the lives of young people are countless and yet music programs in our schools continue to be seriously underfunded,” Anastasio explained in an official statement. “Thankfully, there are organizations like The Mockingbird Foundation that are on the frontlines of this very worthy cause. They have donated over $1.4 million for both musical instruments and supporting staffing of school music departments in all 50 states. The fact that this non-profit organization was founded and funded by the Phish fan community is incredibly inspiring and humbling.”
As always, Newport Folk is sold out. For more information on the event click here.

March 21, 2019 at 6:48 pmThank you Trey. Here is to Phans and Phish. Gonna be a great year in terms of so many bands touring, some for the last time. Lets prove Rock N Roll is about amazing music, freedom, respect, diversity, charity, common sense, and especially hope. It has no definition rock ‘n’ roll. Maybe that’s why Phish is so amazing. Just when you think you put your finger on their style, they mutate again, although they are always mutating. It is like if you film a mushroom growing in time lapse. It doesn’t happen all at once, but over time, a lot of stuff happens. Phish may improvise more than any rock ‘n’ roll band ever. Not saying they are better, as comparisons are stupid. Just pointing out a fact, and they improvise a lot.
Everybody have a lot of fun this summer at all the shows and all the bands. And speaking of fun, Trey loves fun. It’s awesome to see a positive piece about him. As he does a lot for charity and others. Frankly the whole band is very nice, and they don’t get much positive press. As for phish fans, no one said life is fair, but it’s ridiculous the negativity shown to a fanbase that has really become quite mellow. Half the shows don’t even have a shakedown Street anymore. Sure Shakedown can make it fun or add to the fun, but it doesn’t change the fact the number one factor is the music. It’s all about the music, and everything else takes care of itself if the music is Topshelf. Please let’s all adhere to commonsense this summer, and have fun, be nice, respect those near you, and as the saying goes—stay in your own movie. Again, no matter what band you hear/see, surrender to the flow, and enjoy all those you know. And to those you don’t know, be kind to strangers. Peace and safe tidings to my friends and jah❤️ love to all ✅🎸👌🏾🙂🐠
