After announcing the extensive initial schedule for his Farewell Tour on Friday, iconic guitarist Peter Frampton appeared on CBS This Morning on Saturday to discuss the impetus behind his impending retirement from the road, namely a recently diagnosed muscle disorder called Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM).

IBM is a rare inflammatory disease that causes muscles to weaken slowly over time. Frampton was first diagnosed after an onstage fall three years ago, and the musician recently realized it had “sped up a little bit,” prompting the plans for the Farewell Tour so he can take advantage of his current facilities.

“I’m able to play great, now,” Frampton explains to CBS’ Anthony Mason. “But in a year’s time, maybe not so good. I’m a perfectionist and I do not want to go out there and feel like, ‘Oh I can’t—this isn’t good.’ That would be a nightmare for me. It’s my passion, I’ve been playing guitar for 60 years—started when I was eight and now I’m 68. So, I’ve had a very good run… The reason I’m calling it the ‘farewell tour,’ again, is because I know that I will be at the top of my game for this tour and I will make it through this and people won’t be saying, ‘Oh you know, he can’t play as good.’ I can. But we just don’t know for how long.”

Frampton also adds the same clarification that he says he told his family when breaking the news: “It’s not life threatening; it’s life changing.”
