Ace of Cups will sit for a conversation with Relix Editor-in-Chief Mike Greenhaus and Rabbi Daniel Brenner on Friday, March 1 at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3. The talk and performance are part of The Friday Night Jam speaking series, which explores the deep connection between spirituality, music and faith.
The performance is part of the veteran San Francisco act’s first East Coast swing since reuniting. As they told Relix in a recent interview, Ace of Cups were part of the seminal Bay Area music scene that gave rise to the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service, but fell victim to sexism and other management issues and never released a proper LP. After they reunited a few years ago, the original members of the all-female ensemble finally released their self-titled debut, features performances by Bob Weir, Taj Mahal. Kaukonen, Jack Casady, David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service), Barry Melton (Country Joe & The Fish), Pete Sears, David Grisman, Steve Kimock, Terry Haggerty (Sons of Champlin), Norman Mayell (Sopwith Camel), Sid Page, Charlie Musselwhite, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Peter Coyote.
The evening will include a Friday night ritual, a conversation, performance and guided meditation.
Previous Friday Night Jam participants include: Guster’s Ryan Miller, Sonya Kitchell, Craig Finn, Matisyahu, Chris Robinson, Dr. Doh’s Eric Slick, Antibalas, Lisa Loeb, The Sway Machinery, Delicate Steve and Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye, among others.
