Widespread Panic returned to Riviera Maya, Mexico, for Panic En La Playa Ocho this week and opened the destination concert event on Friday night with the first of four two-set performances, featuring a surprise guest appearance from Dumpstaphunk keyboardist Ivan Neville, who is at the event to play a couple sets with the Playa Allstars this weekend.
The sit in took place in the middle of the first set last night, with Neville joining Panic’s JoJo Hermann behind his keyboard setup and taking lead vocals on a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s classic “Pusherman.” Neville also stuck around on stage to help out on Panic’s own “You Should Be Glad.” After a second set that featured Panic staples like “Driving Song” and “All Time Low,” plus a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” led by drummer Duane Trucks and percussionist Sunny Ortiz, Panic returned to the stage to wrap up night one with an encore of The Band’s “Ophelia” and their own “North.”
