Dead & Company returned to Mexico this week for their annual Playing in the Sand destination concert event, and the group kicked off the festivities on Thursday evening in Riviera Maya, offering two relatively standard sets of Grateful Dead favorites.
Set one opened with a crowd-pleasing “Shakedown Street” and featured classics like “Jack Straw,” “Friend of the Devil” and “New Speedway Boogie,” followed by a second frame that opened with the band’s regular run of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider” interrupted by a “Cumberland Blues.” Later on in the set, Dead & Co. delivered a “Terrapin Station” that led into “Drums” and “Space,” followed by “Stella Blue” and a closing run of “Help On the Way,” “Slipknot!” and “Franklin’s Tower.” Night one then wrapped up with an acoustic rendition of “Ripple.”
See the full setlist below, along with video of both set openers as shared by the group. Playing in the Sand continues today with music from Dumpstaphunk and Larkin Poe, before Dead & Company get back on stage tomorrow and Sunday evening for two more performances.

Then it’s strands of golden gossamer spun by a celestial choir. But I wouldn’t expect a guy who likes to refer to himself as ‘Dick’ to understand that.
