Umphrey’s McGee capped off their New Year’s Eve run at the Tabernacle in Atlanta with a three-set, year-end performance on Monday evening, and the band packed the night with a number of collaborations with frequent NYE backing horn section Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret, plus some cover debuts, bustout tunes and more.

The band kicked off the show with a juxtaposition of old and new, opening with “The Silent Type” from their their first of multiple new albums that came out this year, it’s not us, followed by “Walletsworth” from 2004’s Anchor Drops. Later in the first set, Umphrey’s offered a rare take on Yes’ classic “Roundabout” for the first time since summer 2015.

Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret horns (led by trumpeter Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou and featuring Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin) got into the game early in the second set—after a “Draconian” opener, the horn players joined UM for a cover of the Weather Report’s “River People,” just the second time the band has played the tune after debuting it during their NYE run in late 2013. The Mad Dog horns stuck around for another new-album track, “Whistle Kids,” then returned later in the second set for Little Feat’s “Fat Man in the Bathtub,”a live debut for Umphrey’s, and the first “It’s About That Time” since March 2017.

Set three rang in 2019 properly with the traditional “Auld Lang Syne” that came out of “Attachments” and brought back the horns, who also joined in on “Resolution,” along with the later tunes “Booth Love” and a cover of INXS’ “What You Need,” another UM debut. The encore opened with a band-versus-horns musical battle, continued with the live staple “Hajimemashite” and closed with a Mad Dogs-assisted cover of KISS’ “Detroit Rock City,” its first appearance in an Umphrey’s set since their debut of it in early 2012.

See the full setlist below, along with a couple videos shared by the band (including a clip of their midnight celebration). Next up for Umphrey’s McGee is a two-night run in Richmond, VA, starting January 11 before the band ships out on Jam Cruise later this month.
