Trey Anastasio dug deep into the Phish repertoire on Saturday night, introducing the first solo acoustic version of “The Connection” at Oakland, Calif.’s Paramount Theatre.

After opening with a double dose of 3.o material – “Kill Devil Falls” and “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” off Joy – Anastasio moved through tunes like “Sleep,” “Frost” and “The Inlaw Josie Wales” before landing on the aforementioned rarity.

According to Phish.net, the short tune was originally the lead single of Phish’s 2004 album Undermind. However, considering the band’s impending hiatus, it was only played four times between 2009 and 2015. This Dec. 8 performance marks the first time it has ever been played in the solo acoustic format.

From there, Anastasio touched on some solo-acoustic favorites like “Water in the Sky,” “Miss You” and “Heavy Things.” The biggest jam of the evening came with a “Sand”> “The Horse”> “Silent in the Morning”> “Backwards Down the Number Line”> “Blaze On” segment, and fans were thrilled to get a taste of Gamehendge with a set-closing pairing of “The Lizards” and “Wilson.”

Anastasio encored with a batch of slower, more sentimental tunes, including “Waste,” “Driver,” “Dog Faced Boy,” “All of These Dreams” and “More.”

The Phish frontman’s acoustic tour will continue on Monday, Dec. 10 in Eugene, Ore.
