The Disco Biscuits’ Marc Brownstein recently debuted his new project Star Kitchen and the group continued its inaugural run this past weekend with a handful of special guests, both announced and surprise, including guitarist Eric Krasno, lap steel virtuoso Robert Randolph and saxophonist James Casey.

On Friday night, Star Kitchen—which features Brownstein on bass, Danny Mayer on guitar, Rob Marscher on organ and Marlon Lewis on drums—played Pennsylvania’s Ardmore Music Hall and welcomed Philadelphia rapper Chill Moody for covers of Wu Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M.” and the oft-sampled Bob James tune “Nautilus”; Casey for Grant Green’s “Jan Jan,” James Brown’s “Soul Power” and Kool & The Gang’s “Let the Music Take Your Mind”; vocalist Lady Alma for the final two songs of the set proper; and Randolph for a trio of encore songs, Jimmy Smith’s “Root Down,” Billy Cobham’s “Red Baron” and “Hip Hug-Her” from Booker T. & the M.G.’s.

Sunday night’s show at Brooklyn Bowl featured a similar setlist, including covers of Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison,” Bob Marley’s “Crisis” and “Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City,” with Krasno and Snarky Puppy horn players Mike “Maz” Maher and Chris Bullock joining for most of the evening, while Casey also returned to join in for select songs, including a closer of Jimi Hendrix’s “Changes.” See Sunday’s full setlist below and listen to a recording of the performance thanks to Eric McRoberts on Archive.org.
