Over the weekend, The String Cheese Incident hosted the sixth annual Suwannee Hulaween, with a lineup featuring Odesza, STS9, Jamiroquai, Janelle Monae and more. For their second of three performance on Saturday night, the band welcomed a parade of guests, including several female vocalists and the horn section from JJ Grey’s band Mofro.

The guest highlight on Saturday came during the second of three sets, when vocalists Rhonda Thomas and Tony White helped out on newer SCI tune “Get To You.” The “Women of the Galaxy” third set later kicked off with Lisa Fischer on vocals for The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter,” followed by Jennifer Hartswick leading the way on Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady.” Thomas also helped SCI cover Tina Turner’s version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” Franklin’s “Respect” and Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” during the set, while Hartswick later took lead and added some trumpet on Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker,” and Fischer sang on Roberta Flack’s hit “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

Heart’s Ann Wilson was also part of the night, taking over for a cover of Cream’s “Politician” and, appropriately , Heart’s classic “Barracuda.” The collected musicians then closed the third set together with a collaborative run of Bob Marley’s “Get Up Stand Up.” Saturday’s encore followed, with an extended final frame that continued the “galaxy” theme with SCI’s versions of several well-known tunes from sci-fi classics—all sandwiched between their own “Rollover”— like the “Imperial March” and “Cantina Song” from Star Wars and music associated with Star TrekClose Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

String Cheese played their third show on Sunday night, welcoming Nth Power guitarist Nick Cassarino to the stage and playing a slew of originals and covers for the packed Florida crowd. The band kicked off the first half with their own “Barstool” as well as a “Mouna Bowa” which they jammed into “High On A Mountain Top.” After the Song In My Head number “Stay Through,” SCI dug into the Townes Van Zandt number “White Freightliner Blues,” the traditional “Whiskey Before Breakfast” and the Michael Kang solo tune “Water,” which was jammed into the band’s seventh-ever performance of Onus B. Johnson’s “Purple Strains (Earls Song).” SCI then closed the first set with the Outside Inside cut “Close Your Eyes.”

“Vertigo,” one of SCI’s newer Sound Lab singles, led last night’s second set, followed by a “Way Back Home”> “Beautiful” segment. Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” got the crowd moving, as Nick Cassarino joined in on guitar and vocals. Cassarino departed shortly for “It Is What Is Is” and “Sirens,” but returned for the String Cheese Incident’s final song of Hulaween 2018, Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).”
