Progressive bluegrass outfit Fruition brought their tour to Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday evening for a show opened by fellow pickers The Lil Smokies, and the headlining band took the opportunity to honor a fallen colleague when they welcomed members of the supporting act for a touching cover of Railroad Earth, in memory of Andy Goessling, the multi-instrumentalist and RRE co-founder who passed away last week.

“We’re so blessed in this musical, traveling community to meet and collaborate with and build and share space with such brilliant artists and wonderful people,” Fruition Mimi Naja said before introducing the tribute. “This next song we’re going to do is a cover song of a band that are now peers and colleagues to us, but really shined a light to lead us on our way. They’re teachers, and now they’re peers.” Fruition and The Lil Smokes then collaborated on Railroad Earth’s “Seven Story Mountain,” which Naja dedicated to the memory of the “gifts that [Andy] gave us all just by shredding music for the people…that guy played every instrument known to man.”
