Greensky Bluegrass returned to one of their “all time favorite venues” on Saturday night, offering up two sets with special sit-ins by tourmates The Lil Smokies and a nod to the venue’s long history with the Grateful Dead.

The band opened the first half with a spacey “Before Bring Out Your Dead”> “Bring Out Your Dead,” which showcased their mystifying light rig as much as the band’s musical prowess. Later, Greensky really got cooking with a double dose of fan favorites “In Control” and “Merely Avoiding,” followed by gospel-inspired tune “Jesus on the Mainline.”

Fiddler Jake Simpson and dobroist Andy Dunnigan of opener The Lil Smokies stepped onstage for set one closers “Second that Emotion” and “Worried About the Weather.” The former tune – a favorite of the Jerry Garcia Band – had the crowd particularly excited, knowing The Capitol Theatre’s legacy as a Grateful Dead-fueled venue.

Set two kicked off with a jolly “Fixin’ to Ruin” with crew members Keith Kinnear and Guido Basista briefly stepping onstage to play woodblock. Greensky kept things moving with “Steam Powered Airplane,” “While Waiting” and “Kerosene.” They dug into a lengthy “Ground Hog”> “Wheel Hoss” jam, before making their way to “Dustbowl Overtures” and their If Sorrows Swim cut “Windshield.”

Greensky’s final jam came with one of their preferred vehicles “Tarpology,” complete with “Shakedown Street” teases and a final segue into “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox.”

The band encored with throwback country tune “Hit Parade of Love.”
