As Phish played their usual Labor Day run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., jam quintet Lotus threw a party of their own, hosting the Summerdance Festival in Garrettsville, Ohio.
Lotus’ Friday night setlist in particular seemed to make a direct reference to Phish’s Dick’s run, hijacking the Vermont quartet’s prior tradition of using Labor Day song choices to spell a message.
After opening with “Suitcases,” and making their way through “Umbilical Moonset,” “Middle Road” and “Mikesnack,” the pattern started to become clear. By the time Lotus closed the first set, wrapping up with “Eats the Light,” “Ramble On” and “Destroyer,” the “Summerdance” setlist had fully come into focus.
The band kicked off their second set with “Anti-Gravity,” “Nri” and a “Contagion”> “Expired Sland” to fully round out the festival’s namesake setlist. The continued on without spelling anything further, jamming “Forgotten,” as well as “Sid”> “Flower Sermon” before encoring with Escaping Sargasso Sea track “Wooly Mammoth.”
