On Tuesday afternoon, Phish announced the passing of Dr. Jack McConnell: retired physician, healthcare advocate and father to keyboardist Page McConnell.

Known to Phish fans for his occasional performances with the band (both singing and tap dancing), most notably on his signature song “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home?” Dr. Jack McConnell was hailed in the medical community for his work developing Tylenol, innovating systems for the first commercial MRI and spearheading projects on gene mapping and DNA.

Watch a video of Dr. Jack McConnell’s final appearance with the band below, taken on Father’s Day 2011 in Portsmouth, Va. Midway through a set one opening “Harpua,” all four of the band member’s fathers stepped onstage to voice Jimmy’s father.

In lieu of flowers, Phish has advised fans to donate to volunteersinmedicine.org, “an organization [Jack] started that helps provide health care to underserved populations all across the country.”
