Dave Matthews Band took the stage in St. Paul, Minn. last night to uproarious cheers. However, fans couldn’t help but notice the absence of one of their key players.

As previously reported longtime Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley suddenly announced his departure from the band in a series of tweets this weekend, stating he needed to focus on his family and his health.

The group served up a strong 17-song set, including a “Don’t Drink the Water” opener that gave way to favorites like “So Much to Say” and “Satellite.” The pre-Superbowl concert, aptly titled The Night Before, also included a number of bust outs, including their first fill-band take on Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King tune “Alligator Pie” since July 13, 2013, the group’s first take on the Busted Stuff track “You Never Know” since July 26, 2014 and the Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King cut “Time Bomb since July 6, 2013.

Later, DMB welcomed pedal-steel guitarist Robert Randolph for a version of “Jimi Thing.” Following the performance, Randolph answered a fan’s question on Twitter, saying he will “most likely” appear onstage with the band later this summer.

After a mid-set “Runnin’ Down A Dream” tribute to Tom Petty—DMB was on hiatus when the rock icon passed and has not covered his anthem since September 7, 2013—DMB encored with “Grey Street” and “Ants Marching,” the latter of which took on new life without Tinsley’s signature violin riffs. Guitarist Tim Reynolds and the band’s horn section filled where Tinsley would usually play.

DMB have been on hiatus since 2016, with the exception of a benefit show in Charlottesville, VA this past September. The group will return to the road for an extended tour this summer, kicking off at The Woodlands, Texas’ The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on May 18.
