Entitled “A Real & Imagined New Year,” STS9 rang in 2018 over four nights on the West Coast, debuting four new originals in the process.

Night one took place at LA’s The Novo, and after a “Really Wut?” show opener, and a version of “Vapors,” the band put a new spin on “The Rabble,” throwing in a drum and bass section. Later, they ended set one with the monumental sound of “The Unquestionable Supremacy of Nature.” Set two highlights included a cover of No Doubt’s “Hella Good” featuring vocalist Sarah Dugas, and a mashup of “Scheme” from the band’s When The Dust Settles EP.

For the rest of the run, the band set up shop at The Warfield in San Francisco. 12/29 saw the first original debut, an ambient set two number, entitled “Murmurs.” The band also encored with Artifact favorite “Peoples.”

On 12/30, STS9 surprised fans when they sat in with opener Cut Chemist for their fourth-ever performance of the jazz cover “Red Clay.” Later, they opened set one with a “Tokyo” > “EB” jam, followed by “Golden Gate,” an unfinished “Gobnugget” and “Shock Doctrine,” before they remixed Lorde’s 2017 hit “Green Light.” In set two, Sarah Dugas returned for a cover of Bobby Caldwell’s “The Night,” and the band debuted yet another new track, entitled “Laia.”

Finally, as New Year’s Eve arrived, STS9 thrilled Deadheads in the audience with a “Shakedown Street” cover, and ended set one with a lengthy “Worry No More” > “Enceladus” > “Worry No More” jam. As midnight inched closer, the band opened set two with a new original “Presence of Light,” and ushered in 2018 with a balloon drop mid-jam. The “Presence of Light” jam segued into “When The Dust Settles,” and then another new song, entitled “Wave Spell.”

STS9 closed out their four-night New Year’s run with their longtime cover of Dee-Lite’s “What Is Love?”

The band’s next performance will be later this month at the Gem & Jam Festival in Tucson, Ariz.
