On May 2, a group of more than 40 drummers from the New Orleans music community gathered in the historic Treme neighborhood at the request of New York City-based concert photographer Marc Millman. It was conceived as a homage to the historic “A Great Day in Harlem” photo taken by Art Kane for Esquire in 1958.

The shoot took place at a former New Orleans high school. The idea was to raise awareness for The Roots of Music organization; the after-school program helps to works with kids ages 9-14 from low-income households. It provides hot meals, teaches these children music history & theory and provides lessons.

Among those who gathered for the photo shoot included Stanton Moore, Johnny Vidacovich, Zigaboo Modeliste, Terence Higgins, Kevin Aucoin, Mike Dillon and many more.

You can purchase the photos here. 50% of all proceeds will go towards The Roots of Music.
