Trey Anastasio visited his longtime collaborator Tom Marshall’s podcast Under the Scales along with special guest host Dan Kanter, formerly Justin Bieber’s musical director, for the first of a two-part interview that focused on Anastasio’s guitars that he’s used along the way as well as a deep dive into the methodology behind Phish’s setlist process.

The first part, available to stream below, will be followed by part two released next Monday, February 13. Marshall and Kanter focus primarily on the mystery behind the setlist process as Anastasio lifts the curtain on many pressing questions such as whether or not Phish uses a setlist onstage, how the guitarist crafts the show beforehand.

Anastasio and Marshall also reminisce about the times when he joined Phish on stage including during the band’s 1995 New Year’s Eve run at Madison Square Garden where Marshall added vocals to Collective Soul’s “Shine.”
