After 2014’s Juice, John Scofield’s first studio album with Medeski Martin & Wood since 2006, the jazz journeyman will release a new solo record, Past Present on September 25. The name suits the album, as Scofield joins forces with old cohorts, famed jazz drummer Bill Stewart and saxophonist Joe Lovano, while welcoming new bassist Larry Grenadier.

Past Present is a very personal record for Scofield, many of the tunes having been written as the guitarist coped with his son’s losing battle with cancer.

Scofield just finished a five-night residency with his trio (including Stewart on drums) at Birdland in New York City on July 11. Sco has not yet planned any shows in support of Past Present, but his tour schedule remains open for the rest of 2015.
