In a new cover story with Billboard, Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen sounded off on frontman David Lee Roth just days before the band is set to embark on a massive tour.

“He does not want to be my friend,” Van Halen says. “How can I put this: Roth’s perception of himself is different than who he is in reality. We’re not in our 20s anymore. We’re in our 60s. Act like you’re 60. I stopped coloring my hair, because I know I’m not going to be young again.”

He also cited Roth’s resistance as the holdup to a potential new Van Halen LP. “It’s hard, because there are four people in this band, and three of us like rock’n’roll. And one of us likes dance music,” he says. “And that used to kind of work, but now Dave doesn’t want to come to the table.”

Outside of the Roth comments, Van Halen also dishes on a variety of topics, including his sobriety (sober since 2008), his unique guitar style (“What the hell did I start here?”) and his disinterest in partying. “I didn’t drink to party,” Van Halen said.

“Alcohol and cocaine were private things to me,” he said. “I would use them for work. The blow keeps you awake and the alcohol lowers your inhibitions. I’m sure there were musical things I would not have attempted were I not in that mental state.”
