Widespread Panic paid tribute to Bill Withers and Joe Cocker, got some help from a horn section and played a few “Happy” tunes during last night’s New Year’s Eve show at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC.

The first set featured a some classic Panic tracks like “Space Wrangler” and “Ain’t Life Grand” before Randall Bramblett & The Megablasters took the stage. The horns came out to help the band cover a trio of Withers hits—“Lean On Me,” “Ain’t No Sunshine and “Use Me” (the first two of which were WSP debuts)—to wrap up the opening set. Bramblett and co. then returned at the end of set two for “Weight of the World” and “Sharon.”

The night’s third and final set got off to a positive start as the band debuted a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Happy” that played into their own “Happy” before segueing into the band’s first-ever rendition of Pharrell Williams’ 2014 hit of the same name. Next came a “Porch Song” that bookended the rest of the set, which also featured takes on “Cotton Was King,” Jerry Joseph’s “Climb to Safety,” “Chilly Water” and more. The band then returned for a “High Time We Went” encore before closing out the show with their first-ever take on Joe Cocker’s version of The Beatles classic “A Little Help From My Friends.”

Widespread Panic will return to the stage later this month when they head to the the Hard Rock Hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for their annual Panic en la Playa destination festival.
