New Orleans pianist Dr. John kicked off his extended ‘Insides Out’ run of shows at Brooklyn, NY’s BAM Howard Gilman Opera House on Thursday night. Throughout the coming weeks, the New Orleans legend will lead an all-star cast of musicians through a mix of themed performances. This weekend’s opening celebratation was dubbed “A Louis Armstrong Tribute” and found Dr. John performing the music of New Orleans’ greatest musical architects. Dr. John opened the show with gospel legends Blind Boys of Alabama as well as trumpeter Roy Hargrove and performed “Wonderful World.” A number of noted trumpeters also sat in with the pianist during the show, including Kermit Ruffins, New Birth Brass Band trumpeter James Andrews, Rene Marie and Wendell Brunious, among others. At the end of the show, most of the evening’s cast returned for a sing-along based around “Saints Go Marching In.”

Dr. John will release his new studio album Locked Down tomorrow. His BAM residency will continue this Thursday.Black Keys guitarist and singer Dan Auerbach—who produced Locked Down and plays throughout the album—is one of the many guests who will help Dr. John perform the tracks off his new studio album.
